The Secret of a Great Ball Striker
To become a great ball striker you must have the 3 components that all great ball strikers have. The proper swing techniques, the physical strength and flexibility and a medical team that can handle the injuries that you will most certainly get as you play the game.
Techniques
As golf professionals we have been teaching techniques for hundreds of years. The fact of the matter is that to play good golf you need a swing that repeats itself over and over, it does not matter if it is a classic swing like Ratif Goosen or an unorthodox swing like Jim Furyk. As long as you do it all the time you will be able to play good golf. Now, it is easier to repeat a classic swing than an unorthodox swing that is why we try to teach sound fundamentals. So find yourself a PGA Professional and start perfecting the basics.
Fitness and Flexibility
The future of a great ball striker is very dependent upon two components, which across the board in most cases are deficient. Those two areas are that of core strength and flexibility of the golfer. In line with Titleist Performance Institute, it is agreed that the sequence of engaging the lower body first, the torso or trunk second and the arms third in the downswing, generates the speed of the swing.
When it comes to the control and speed of motion that separates upper from lower body, it is that of the abdominal muscles and the obliques as well as mid and lower back muscles that can have the most impact on any athlete, both of their strength and range of motion.
As a strength and fitness coach, increasing the flexibility through the thoracic or mid back will make way for noticeable improvement immediately in the width of the back swing, all the way to the finish. Tight lats and surrounding shoulder muscles can also restrict a golfers backswing dramatically. Pneuromuscular Facilitated Stretching is one of the most effective formats to address tight muscles.
As core conditioning improves in all planes of motion including rotational, flexion, lateral and sagittal movements, the clubhead speed increases with much less effort! Incorporate flexibility of the hip flexors, the hamstrings and strength to the glutes, and a player will eliminate any lateral slide motion or early extension. By addressing these areas you will not only improve your drive, you will also be adding the benefit of injury prevention while increasing your recovery rate!
Resolving golf injuries
Despite being considered a low impact, non-strenuous activity that can be enjoyed by players of all ages and abilities, golf also has a down side- injury. In fact each year hundreds of thousands of golfers develop some form of pain or injury that interferes with their ability to swing the club and play their best, or keeping them off the golf course all together. Golfers must understand that if they cannot make a shoulder turn or find it difficult to shift their weight the problem may not be technique, it most likely is a physical limitation that can be remedied through a treatment known as Active Release Techniques.
